THE ODDSOCK BLUES (©Words and music by Paul F. Cowlan)

It’s something of a personal triumph to have come up with a spot-on tragic blues theme which has never occurred to anybody else before. Like all such strokes of genius, once you’ve thought of it you can’t for the life of you imagine how Willie Dixon could have missed it. Of course many of the most famous blues singers were blind, which might partly explain why odd socks did not really bother them.

Do your socks get lonesome, sittin’ up there on the shelf?
Do your socks get lonesome, sittin’ up there on the shelf?
Two blue socks and two black socks, and one red sock all by itself.

I put two blue socks and two black socks in my washing machine.
Two blue socks and two black socks, people, in my doggone washing machine.
But when I took them out again, one was missing, and the other one was green.

Well, you know people. You know what I’m talkin’ about.
How come when two socks go in the washing machine
there’s only one sock that comes out?

I thought I could solve my problem if I threw all my socks away.
Yeah, I thought I could solve my problem if I threw all my socks away.
I bought myself six new pairs, and all of them were grey!
But when I done washed them,
Lord God knows I thought I’s bound to lose my mind.
Eleven grey socks and one pink sock was all that I could find.

Well, well, well. Woah yeah.

When I was just a young boy, at the age of five,
my Mama said that she believed my socks was alive.
But now I’m a man, way past twenty-one,
let me tell you people, my socks is lots of fun.
I spell S.O.C.K. Sock.

Now the socks I wear can never miss.
When women see my odd socks they just can’t resist.
All you pretty girls sitting there in a line,
I can take your socks off in five minutes time.
Well, ain’t that a man?!

Sometimes my socks is full of holes.
You can see my heels and toes, you can even see my soles.
But I don’t care. I’m still walkin’ tall,
even when the holes are so big you can’t see no socks at all,
because I know I’ve still got two feet to fill my shoes.
And if I don’t have no socks no more I won’t have these oddsock Blues.
