MR. WORLDLYWISEMAN(© Words and Music by Paul F. Cowlan )

The title is stolen from a character in John Bunyan’s ‘Pilgrim’s Progress.’  Despite the passing years he’s still out there somewhere, and you’re bound to meet him sooner or later.

Mr. Worldlywiseman knows the answers to
every single question in the world.
You’ll never see him stall, he’s always on the ball.
Mr. Worldlywiseman knows it all.
He’ll tell you where to find the action.
He’ll tell you where you ought to be.
He’ll analyse your reaction
to everything that you see.
‘Cos Mr. Worldlywiseman knows the answers to
every single question in the world.

Mr. Worldlywiseman is the only one
who can answer what you have in mind.
He’s heard the latest news, he’s read the best reviews,
ask him now, you know he won’t refuse.
Why should you go to church on Sunday?
Why should you never go at all?
Why should Tuesday follow Monday?
And who wrote the writing on the wall?
Mr. Worldlywiseman knows the answers to
every single question in the world.

Mr. Worldlywiseman has so many friends,
folk can hardly bear to stay away.
“We can rely on you to help us see it through.
Tell us now, what should we do?”
And he’s only on his own this evening
because he wants to be that way;
but he looks so sad when you say that you must be leaving.
You can see that he wants to ask, “Why don’t you stay?”
Mr. Worldlywiseman knows the answers to
almost every question in the world.

There isn’t anyone he don’t know.
There isn’t anywhere he can’t go.
He’s got it made, but even so,
sometimes he’s so lonely.
Oh, why should he be so lonely?
